My husband and I have been RVing for over 40 years, the last 15 years in a 45 foot diesel pusher.  I have never driven one of these big rigs as I have always felt very intimidated by the sheer size of the unit, however, I knew I really needed to learn to drive.  When we discovered the RV Driving School would be offering lessons in Gillette, WY, at the Newmar International Rally, my husband quickly signed me up to have Paul Metzinger as my instructor.  I wasn’t excited at the prospect of getting behind the wheel of our coach, but I knew it was necessary.

Prior to the behind the wheel training, we attended 3 driving seminars presented by Paul.  These seminars were very informative, and Paul stressed the importance of women learning how to drive RVs.  He stressed how the driving classes are taught in such a way that one can be successful in this endeavor.

On day 1 of my lessons, I was anxious, but Paul was very clear in his instructions, even repeating them if necessary.  He was very patient and reassuring as we began.  Paul was quick to make positive comments, thumbs ups, when I was successful with the particular task at hand.  The first day we concentrated on making right and left turns, driving around the rally venue, and even driving on the interstate.  The more I drove the more confident I became!  By the end of the first day of instruction I knew I would be successful in completing the course.

On day 2 of my lessons, Paul had me backing up our 45 ft coach in a straight line for 500 feet.  He was very complimentary on my accomplishment.  We then drove to the old residential part of town, where the streets were narrow and many cars parked along the curb.  I was very anxious, but by using the tips Paul had taught me, and with his encouragement, I was able to drive in a “real time” situation. I felt very proud of myself!  Lastly, Paul taught me how to easily back into an RV site by using the pivot point on the coach.

Paul was an incredible instructor, so patient, encouraging, and thorough in his instructions and his expectations.  He has given me the confidence I need to drive our coach, and I am so thankful for the opportunity to learn from him. Now I actually think driving the RV is fun!
